Collins Cove
2010
After a short week at work, we loaded up on Thursday evening and headed out for
Collins Cove Horse Camp in Ivanhoe, VA. We found Blue already there and setting up camp.
It was good to see our friend from Tennessee. As darkness overcame us, we called it a night
and went to bed, anxious for Friday's ride. The morning arrived and we were joined by Tony
and then by George and Janet. Five mules and a horse traveled over to the big pastures
where we checked out a big barn in the hollow. It was in a cool place where the breezes
blew cool air down the center aisle. The cattle thought the same thing, as there were about
20 head hanging out in the barn. Back at camp that evening, we were joined by
Karen & Dave, Bobbie & Larry, Max & Lu, and Pete.
On Saturday, we headed out to cross Cripple Creek, where we then cut across a section of
the pastures and back into the trees. My promise to take the group to get ice cream led us
to end up at Iron Mt. Horse Camp, only to find the office/store closed. Luckily, after a short
time in the porch swings, the owner came and opened up. We left Iron Mt. and continued on
the trails back toward camp. That evening we were waiting for Tony's peach cobbler to cook
when the rains came driving everyone home to their trailers. Tony set a new record for
cooking cobbler that evening. It took 3 hours to finally get the fire and coals hot enough to
cook in the Dutch Oven. We enjoyed the cobbler topped off with more ice cream and went to
bed.
A short ride on Sunday carried us up the ridge and back over to the open area cleared up
by Hurricane Hugo in 1989. We took a short break and headed down the side on the mountain
and back to camp. About half way down the hill, we broke out the slickers for a short shower.
We were happy that it stopped before we got to camp. Everyone then loaded up and said
goodbye til the next ride.
Thanks to everyone for coming to the ride.
See Ya at the next one,
Teddy Royal
